Ethics Policy

Independence
Rochester Overture is editorially independent. Our coverage decisions are made solely on the basis of journalistic judgment and are never influenced by institutions, interviewees, advertising, sponsorship, or donor relationships. We accept no payment in exchange for coverage. Our founding editor maintains separate freelance work with some arts institutions in the region; where that work intersects with our coverage, we disclose the relationship in accordance with our conflicts of interest policy below.

Press Passes and Complimentary Tickets
Rochester Overture accepts press passes and complimentary tickets from arts organizations and presenters in order to cover performances and exhibitions. This is standard practice in arts journalism and does not influence our coverage. We do not accept gifts, meals, or other payments from individuals or organizations we cover. Accepting complimentary access to events does not obligate us to any particular editorial outcome.

Conflicts of Interest
We disclose any relationship that could create the appearance of a conflict of interest. This includes current freelance work for institutions we cover, as well as personal relationships with artists whose work we report on. Disclosure will appear at the end of any piece where a relevant relationship exists. When a conflict is significant enough to compromise coverage integrity, we will assign the piece to another contributor or decline to cover it.

Corrections
Rochester Overture is committed to accuracy. When we make errors, we correct them promptly and transparently. Corrections are noted at the bottom of the relevant piece with a clear explanation of what was changed and why. We welcome corrections from readers, artists, and institutions and ask that you contact us.

Editorial Boundaries
Sponsors, donors, and community partners have no influence over editorial content. Coverage decisions — what we cover, how we cover it and what we conclude — belong entirely to Rochester Overture’s editorial staff.

Artificial Intelligence
All published work is expected to reflect the original reporting, analysis, criticism, and writing of the credited contributor. AI-assisted tools for non-editorial administrative purposes, such as interview transcription and spell-checking, may be used. But we otherwise prohibit the use of artificially generated content. We take pride in ensuring that the information and insights you read on Rochester Overture have the viewpoint, contradiction and even imperfection of human thought.
