From comedian heckling to a musical revue about baseball to Broadway songs that got the axe before making it to the stage, the ESL Rochester Fringe Festival had plenty to offer. Rochester Overture writers caught several shows on Friday and Saturday, some of which you can still see later today.

Native Rochesterian Julia Figueras moderates the pre-concert chats for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s Philharmonics series and hosts the RPO’s Voices of Today podcasts. She is the former WXXI-FM music director, midday announcer, and producer/host of Backstage Pass, WXXI’s award-winning live performance/interview show, having retired after more than 26 years.
Julia’s radio career began at WICN in Worcester; she worked in formats ranging from classical to rock to jazz—with a dash of talk—in Boston and New Hampshire. She received her bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts, cum laude, from Brandeis University.
The mother of two daughters and the grandmother of the world’s cutest boy, Julia has a passion for the Red Sox, NYT puzzles, loves everything from Springsteen to Sibelius, and enjoys mysteries and histories. She is grateful her husband is an excellent cook. Currently, Julia sits on the board of directors for the William Warfield Scholarship Fund.

Sophocles’s drama “Antigone” is one of the great tragedies, time-tested, reworked, and revisited numerous times is its 2,500-year history. This edition, by Needs More Work Productions, offers the audience a chance to change the fate of Antigone, even if the actress playing her doesn’t want it. It repeats through Sunday at Rochester Fringe.
Day one of the Rochester Fringe Festival kicked off yesterday, Tuesday, September 15, with showings of some of the main fringe-curated attractions. Those shows proved both irreverent and heartwarming.
