Jazz Festival Live: June 21

9:55 PM

After Arturo, I took some time to enjoy the festival atmosphere. The new Wegmans Pavilion is a new open air venue in place of the Big Tent, now with free shows. Dirty Blanket was entertaining the crowd while I grabbed some moderately healthy artichokes.

I’m currently waiting for Joe Farnsworth’s late show at Max, but I did get a chance to hear the razor tight Navy Jazz Band on the Jazz Street stage. Before they played, the Navy musicians were walking around looking very official.

I’m looking forward to hearing Sarah Hanahan, the Downbeat Rising Star alto sax player. More on this show and others in tomorrow morning’s review.

After an original stew concocted by Paul Cornish and his trio, where they made standard tunes sound like nothing you’ve heard before, I’m at Arturo Sandoval. So far, he’s wailed on the trumpet, banged on drums, tickled the keys, and scatted faster than most can fly across an instrument’s keys. He told a fun story about bebop while surprising the audience with unexpected “bams.” And now they are funking up the stage. Sandoval is a master entertainer at work

There’s already a line forming at Montage Music Hall for Bowmanville Swing, a Chicago band that seems like an eclectic mix of swing and rock jam band styles from its description. The show starts at 6 p.m.
