The New York State Senate passed its fiscal year 2027 budget last week, which includes $4 million dollars to help Garth Fagan Dance build a new downtown home. The dance company has been angling for studio renovations and a new downtown theater space for dance.
In a Facebook post, Pennewell called it “an amazing shot in the arm and important recognition,” and saw the funding as “an acknowledgment of the need for a more sophisticated home for GFD!”
The budget further increased funding for the New York State Council on the Arts by $20 million for operating funding, to $80.6 million, and by $420 million for capital funding, to $860 million. Additionally, $5 million is earmarked for Alive Downtown! theaters.
