After stopping for some food, I’m at the Joe Lovano and Friends concert celebrating Coltrane at 100. Right now, there are only three tenor saxophones on the stage: Lovano, George Garzone, and Jerry Bergonzi. I say only, but when the three of them noodle and wail together, it’s quite the wall of sound. John Nugent did say that Frank Tiberi was here, so I’m expecting him to join at some point. The band launched first into a droning, meditative mixture, of Coltrane’s spiritual turn, and then moved into hard-hitting bop, and it’s been nearly a half hour without stopping, a morphing between tunes.

Brandon Woody and Upendo is an intense ride. Woody has such a dark and focused tone on the trumpet, and his band are just creating textures of sound around him. They played one memorably emotional slower work that was just phenomenal. In other tunes, they go off into a stew of sound. If you’re looking for the hardest hitting, most contemporary jazz, check out their late set at the Theater at Innovation Square

The rain moved through, the sun is out, and it’s a beautiful and temperate night on Jazz Street. I’m already in Max of Eastman Place to catch a little bit of the Rodriguez Brothers, before I head over to the Theater at Innovation Square for Brandon Woody.

Passing storms are moving through Rochester this afternoon. But as of now, the weather radar looks clear by around 4 p.m. I’m keeping an eye on festival updates in case any outdoor afternoon shows are delayed or canceled.
