Jazz Festival Live - June 26 — Rochester Overture

Kyle Roussel can shift on a dime between second-line marches and Beethoven sonatas, which is exactly what he did in Kilbourn Hall with his trio. Then, as a quartet with a guest singer, the band launched into soul/R&B, always with a touch of New Orleans bluesy licks.

I’m now in Orrin Evan’s show at Max, where he just finished a pulsating version of Frere Jacques.

I’ve been attempting updates, but in my running around, I keep seeing more to watch/hear/photograph. The streets of the East End are full and alive with lots of pick-up groups entertaining street walkers on East Ave., in addition to the free stages. Sasha Dobson’s low-key set was enjoyable, but not what I needed after eight intense days of music and writing. But I’m currently in Kyle Roussel, who I’ve already heard impressed in the earlier set. Brittany Davis was intense protest music, and there’s a lot more to say about that, but suffice that it was powerful stuff.

My first stop for the night is at the Montage Musical Hall—my first stop in at Montage of the festival, which I can’t quite believe—for the powerful vocalist Brittany Davis. It’s relatively empty, so come on down. This is not a singer to miss. The show starts at 6 PM.
